Umm…so close

I was reading a book with Ellie last night where kids are walking through a snowy woods and finding various clues that animals have recently been there. Each page ends with the question, “who’s been here?”, prompting Ellie to guess. Take into consideration this takes place in a North American forest and she did a pretty good job of guessing. It went something like this:

Me: there are tracks along the riverbank and a fish head left there. Who’s been here?

Ellie: an otter?

Me: (turning the page) so close! a muskrat. Next….a nest of leaves up in a tree…..

Ellie: an owl?

Me: no…..squirrels! Next…..some feathers on the ground and sumac berries off the tree….

Ellie: a bird?

Me: yes! Good job. Do you know what kind that it? A cardinal. OK…. A patch of bark has been rubbed off this tree….

Ellie: a Pygmy marmoset?

Wow! Ellie is one smart little girl! Hannah’s vocabulary is expanding everyday…sometimes I wonder where she has learned all the words she knows! But I can guarantee that she doesn’t know what a Pygmy marmoset is!
