little toes

Ellie: (appearing in the doorway and displaying little toes for me) I just wanted to do it.
Me: (I look down, unsure what ‘it’ is; see she has painted her toenails pink. On her own. Somewhere. In. the. House.) Ahhhhh! Ellie! (leaping up from the chair) Where did you do this? Show me!
 (and after surveying that [...]

theology is everywhere

One of my favorite blogs is Mockingbird, which looks at current culture for illustrations of grace and law. It has helped me find my own versions of it in my everyday life. I’m a firm believer in interacting and embracing all aspects of art and culture in the hopes of redeeming it. Mockingbird Ministries embraces [...]

Growing

Signs our children are growing up:

1. Toby lost his first tooth (Caleb has lost 4) and the new one is already growing in.
2. Ellie will start Sunday school next Sunday with the 4-7 year olds.
3. Caleb reads signs to us on car trips.

Rain Does Not Stop Us

Despite tonight’s rain, we ended up having a fun Halloween evening. We braved the umbrella-wielding crowds of our small towns and managed to get a small amount of candy (all we need!), three new books (our library gives them out on Halloween-how cool is that?) and the odd assortment of cheap plastic (read:disposable) toys.
The boys [...]

small scenes of recent life involving honking, far away places and mayo

Scene: washing dishes; Ellie reaches under the sink.
Ellie: Tell me when you want me to honk it.
Me: What do you mean? (I look down.)
She is ready to flip the garbage disposal switch. Niice.

Spies Among Us

Caleb is now 6 and had a blast of a spy party last Saturday. He and seven other boys were trained as spies. Each was given a spy notebook with their agent initial on it (Agent C thought this was cool.) They also had a spy badge with their fingerprint on it so no one [...]

my sister is married!

My sister got married last weekend! All three of our kids were in the ceremony as flower girl and ring bearers.
See more pictures from the awesome event here.

fruit of the spirit

Brian: What did you learn in Sunday school today?
Caleb: About the fruit of the spirit.
Brian: Can you name any of them?
Caleb: Sure…oranges, apples, lemons…
Brian: No, those aren’t the fruit of the spirit. It’s things like joy, peace, patience…
Caleb: (giving Brian a look): Of course. That’s what’s ON the fruit.
